1989 saw the local bar called The Courtyard announce that it would have topless bars on a Sunday. Letters to the press ensued expressing disgust of such an event and stating it was immoral for there to be topless barmaids on a Sunday. Others claimed they were, “too disgusted to complain”. However those in favour argued it was “bringing Spalding out of the Dark Ages.”
In the meantime a local car dealer tried to jump on the band wagon by advertising that it was “time to go topless” and buy the new Rover 200 cabriolet convertible.
The topless barmaids had their day and the Courtyard closed. However, those wishing for a touch of nostalgia could head to Nottingham where survived the UK’s last Hooters.
