In the late 19th Century Spalding’s success at cricket caused a local learned man to argue that the sport possibly originated here. He found reference to sixteenth century game of stools being played – a predecessor to Cricket where the “stumps” were effectively stools. This was referred to as “Kriekstoel” – tying in with the area’s Dutch connections it is apparently a Mid-Dutch word for a long low stool.
But surely that points to cricket being Dutch?
