29. Skulls found beneath the bar of the Lincoln Arms

farmersfriendlincs

In January 1939 a number of human bones and three or four human skulls were unearthed by workmen under the floor of the Lincoln Arms Inn in London Road Spalding.

The site is thought to have been part of a narrow burial ground from the days of Spalding Priory. This seems feasible as over time human bones have been found from the Lincoln Arms up along the riverside towards Bridge Street and the Market Place. One instance caused consternation when the workmen digging a trench in Bridge Street lay the skulls alongside the trench with one of the skulls having a smouldering cigarette in its jaws.
