Dr Richard Bentley was for a short period Master of Spalding Grammar School. He was an accomplished Greek scholar. Maurice Johnson of Spalding was furious that Bentley removed the charter and other documents relating to Spalding Priory from Spalding without either authority or permission.
Dr. Richard Bentley was well known for his arrogance and is regarded as one of the founders of classical Greek study in England. He did write a letter to a friend that he had “obtained some very curious manuscripts” at Spalding and he was thinking of publishing them.
