Considering Spalding has had a Conservative MP since 1966 and prior to that Sir Herbert Butcher of The National Liberal Party, it is possibly surprising to see Spalding celebrate the birth of socialist Labour politician George Shepherd with a blue plaque on Number 4 New Road, Spalding.
George Shepherd was born there in 1881 where his father was a tailor. He went away to Bradford aged 19 and managed a shoe shop where he married Ada Newton, a trade unionist and women’s rights campaigner.
George became First Baron Shepherd of Spalding in 1946 having been Labour agent from 1929 to 1946. He was both a government Chief Whip and a Privy Counsellor.
